In January 2025, major websites, including Ookla Speedtest, a widely-used service for checking Internet connections, have shared intriguing reports on their performance metrics.
Ookla’s insights offer a snapshot of global Internet performance at the start of 2025. According to the report, the average global download and upload speeds for broadband connections stood at 97.61 Mbps and 52.84 Mbps, respectively, with a latency of 9 ms.
For mobile connections, the average speeds were 91.24 Mbps for download and 13.47 Mbps for upload, with a latency of 23 ms.
Ookla’s report categorizes data into Mobile (covering networks like 4G and 5G) and Broadband (including wired connections such as DSL, coaxial cables, and fiber optics). In the Mobile category, the United Arab Emirates led with 545.94 Mbps, followed by Qatar at 521.51 Mbps, and Kuwait securing third place with 314.39 Mbps.
In the Broadband segment, Singapore maintained its lead since the previous year, boasting an average download speed of 336.45 Mbps and an upload speed of 275.30 Mbps. The United Arab Emirates and Hong Kong followed with 310.05 Mbps and 305.71 Mbps, respectively.
Indonesia ranked 84th in mobile connectivity, with an average speed of 40.44 Mbps.
Broadband performance in Indonesia was slightly better, securing the 121st position with an average speed of 32.12 Mbps.
While these speeds surpass those of Cuba, achieving a ranking above 50 would be a noteworthy milestone.
One contributing factor to Indonesia’s subpar Internet connectivity is the nation’s vast geography, where quality Internet access remains unevenly distributed. For instance, even in Java, areas like Pantai Ujung Genteng and its surroundings suffer from poor connectivity, making simple tasks like file loading a challenge.
Additionally, corruption-free governance ensures that allocated funds for infrastructure development are used diligently by officials for research and initiatives aimed squarely at benefiting the Indonesian populace.
