The Task Manager is a crucial component of the Windows operating system, allowing users to monitor and manage running applications, even forcibly closing them when necessary.
Interestingly, there’s a noteworthy observation: the Task Manager sometimes fails to display CPU usage percentages accurately. On the Performance tab, the CPU usage shown doesn’t align with the CPU usage listed in the Processes section, even when all application-specific CPU usages are summed up.
The displayed figures won’t match. For instance, if the Performance tab shows 100% CPU usage, the total CPU usage of all applications in the Processes section won’t add up to 100%.
This discrepancy might appear as a bug since the information isn’t consistent. However, it occurs because the Processes page uses a unique formula for CPU usage, while the Performance page employs a more standardized formula.
Due to this difference in formulas, users will notice a mismatch between the CPU usage displayed in the Performance tab and the total usage in the Processes section.
Through the release of KB5052090 for Windows 11 Insider Dev and Beta users, Microsoft has addressed this issue by introducing a new option: CPU (with the new formula) and CPU Utility (using the old formula).
This change isn’t limited to Windows Insider users, as reports suggest the same update will be rolled out for Windows 11 24H2 users. Let’s wait and see when Microsoft officially releases this update.
In any case, this isn’t a significant problem, as many users remain unaware of the discrepancy. What’s your take on this? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
