With the release of Windows 11 24H2 Build 26120.3281 (update KB5052086) for Insider Dev and Beta users, Microsoft appears to have removed organization-related content from the Recent, Recommended, and other sections like Favorites in File Explorer.
On its official support page, Microsoft confirmed that they have indeed disabled account-based content in File Explorer for Entra ID users within the European Union. This means account-based content will no longer appear in sections like Recent, Favorites, Details Pane, and Recommended.
Why is this happening? Microsoft seems compelled to make these changes in File Explorer to comply with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the European privacy law enacted in 2018. GDPR includes provisions to protect the personal data of EU citizens and sets guidelines for the secure collection, storage, and use of this data.
Since these features conflict with personal data guidelines, they needed to be modified and adjusted. However, it’s important to note that this change only applies to Entra ID users in the European Union.
