Mozilla Extends Support for Windows 7 and 8.1 Until September 2025

Several months ago, Mozilla announced it would extend Firefox browser support for unsupported devices (Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 as well as macOS 10.12 to 10.14) and continue rolling out critical updates until March 2025.
Now, there’s more good news. Recently, Mozilla revealed it will keep supporting end-of-life systems (Windows 7, 8, and 8.1 as well as macOS 10.12 to 10.14) at least until September 2025.

This marks the second time Mozilla has extended support for platforms that have reached their end of life. One possible reason is Mozilla’s aim to expand its user base by providing security updates for users who haven’t upgraded to newer operating systems.
Additionally, Mozilla has a significant user base still running Windows 7 and older macOS versions. These users rely on Firefox as their primary browser, and discontinuing support prematurely could expose them to security risks.

By extending support, Mozilla ensures these users can continue browsing the internet safely while giving them more time to transition to newer platforms. This move also helps Mozilla solidify its position in the browser market, which is currently dominated by Chromium-based browsers.
Mozilla’s decision provides some breathing room for users still on unsupported systems. However, it’s advisable for users to upgrade their systems promptly for enhanced security.
