Rumor: Instagram May Separate Reels as a Standalone Feature!

Recent reports suggest that Meta is considering the launch of a standalone app dedicated to short-form videos. According to The Information, citing unnamed sources, Instagram head Adam Mosseri has discussed this initiative with his team.

Referred to as Project Ray, this endeavor aims to enhance recommendations for both new and existing users in the United States, featuring more three-minute videos.
Meta has yet to officially comment. However, recalling the recent launch of Meta’s new app, Edits, designed to compete with Bytedance’s Capcut, this could mark the beginning of Meta’s standalone short video app, distinct from Instagram.
Currently, Instagram’s feed blends photos, videos (Reels), and Stories. However, many users feel the app has become cluttered with video content, straying from its original focus as a photo-sharing platform. Adam Mosseri has acknowledged this and mentioned ongoing experiments, possibly related to the rumored standalone Reels app.

If this rumor holds true, Instagram may return to its roots, prioritizing photo content over Reels. Additionally, Reels might be spun off into a separate app, similar to the current Threads.
For now, Meta and Instagram have not provided any official clarification regarding this matter.
