The Rewrite feature was initially introduced a few months ago, making its debut in Microsoft Edge and currently being tested for integration into Notepad. However, according to the latest leak from @TheBobPony on X, this upcoming feature in Notepad will require users to log in with a Microsoft account.
From the screenshot above, it appears that logging in (to use the Rewrite feature) will allow Microsoft to collect user request information for AI safety and security purposes.
This prompt has surfaced in the latest Notepad version for Insider users, but unfortunately, I haven’t encountered it—perhaps because my device isn’t Copilot+? I’m unsure. Have you received it yet?
This news has sparked sharp criticism, as many users feel that Notepad shouldn’t require a login just to use the Rewrite feature, especially if user data is being collected for AI purposes. What’s your take? Share your thoughts in the comments below.
Personally, I quite like Notepad in Windows 11, especially with its Tab and Dark mode features, which are highly practical. However, the introduction of AI, in my opinion, risks overshadowing Notepad’s simplicity.
As alternatives, Notepad++ and Sublime Text stand out as excellent options, offering more advanced features compared to Notepad in Windows 11.
