Apple has made headlines recently with the UK government compelling the tech giant to disable the advanced data protection (ADP) feature for users in the United Kingdom. This move comes in response to a government mandate requiring Apple to create a backdoor for accessing encrypted user data.
As a result, data stored in iCloud will no longer be fully end-to-end encrypted (E2E) in the UK. This grants local law enforcement agencies the ability to access user data whenever deemed necessary.
For context, Apple currently employs two encryption methods for iCloud. The default setting is Standard Data Protection (SDP), where encryption keys are stored in Apple’s Data Centers. While certain data is encrypted, Apple retains the ability to assist users with data recovery in case of issues.
The second method is advanced data protection (ADP), which offers the highest level of security. With ADP, encryption keys remain solely on users’ devices, meaning even Apple cannot access the data. However, this feature will no longer function for iCloud storage, device backups, web bookmarks, notes, photos, and other data for UK users.
This decision by the UK government is based on the Investigatory Powers Act, which has faced significant backlash. Apple, in a statement to Bloomberg, expressed deep disappointment over the move.
UK customers currently using ADP must manually disable it during a grace period to retain access to their iCloud data. Apple has also committed to providing additional guidance for affected users in the UK, as it cannot automatically disable E2E encryption on their behalf.
Bagaimana menurutmu? coba komen dibawah guys.
Despite this setback, Apple will continue to offer E2E encryption for other features such as iMessage, FaceTime, Passwords, and Apple Health data, where encryption is enabled by default.
