In recent months, Microsoft has frequently removed various elements from the Windows 11 operating system, with the latest being the elimination of the Location History feature. This removal has already commenced in the Insider Dev and Beta versions.
In essence, Location History is an API responsible for gathering and storing user device location data over the past 24 hours.
Through this API, multiple applications can effortlessly access it to retrieve stored location data without requesting a new position. The API is limited to 3,600 positions and delivers relevant information, suggestions, geographically-based reminders, and more to users.
As Microsoft has clarified, this feature was once highly beneficial for Cortana. However, with Cortana also being discontinued, the decision was made to deactivate this feature as well.
Currently, the Location History feature can still be found under Settings > Privacy and Security > Location > Location History.
The answer is no. Removing this feature doesn’t mean user locations won’t be detected; rather, the 24-hour location history will no longer be stored as it was previously.
