Meta Plans Major Investment in Humanoid Robotics

The AI craze is intensifying, with Bloomberg reporting that Meta is allegedly starting to bet on humanoid robots and planning a “major investment” in this field. It is said that Meta is forming a new team within its Reality Labs division to focus on futuristic robotics.
According to the report, Meta employees have been informed about this new team, which will be led by former Cruise CEO Marc Whitten. Whitten has held significant roles at Amazon, Sonos, and Microsoft, where he was a founding engineer on the Xbox team.
Interestingly, creating humanoid robots is notoriously challenging due to the complexity of human anatomy. Mimicking human body movements requires highly advanced hardware and intricate design.
On the software side, AI has already reached an impressive level and is expected to advance even further in the coming years. If both hardware and software continue to progress, the era of humanoid robots may soon transition from a futuristic dream to reality.
Several companies are already developing technologies in this direction. For instance, Tesla is working on its Tesla Bot, while Samsung and Apple are rumored to be pursuing similar projects.

Although Meta is not widely recognized for its hardware expertise, aside from its smart glasses and VR headsets, the company lacks extensive experience in this area, especially given the competition.
Nevertheless, Meta executives are optimistic about the company’s prospects, citing its extensive expertise in AI and data as a competitive advantage. In a memo, Meta’s CTO, Andrew Bosworth, stated:
Bloomberg reports that while Meta plans to develop hardware for its humanoid robots, its ultimate goal is to become the Google of the robotics industry. The company aims to offer platforms, software, sensors, and AI for other manufacturers to build their own robots.
